Ukai- Cormorant fishing - 宇治川の鵜飼

 

初夏から秋にかけての日本の風物詩、鵜飼。夜にたいまつの火に惑わされて上ってくる鮎などの魚を鵜に飲み込ませて捕まえるという古来からのこの漁法は、京都の宇治川や愛知の木曽川など、いくつかの都道府県でのみ目にすることのできるスペクタクルなもの。伝統的には鵜飼は男性の職業とされてきたが、近年では全国でまだ数人だが女性の鵜飼も誕生してきている。

Ukai is traditional fishing that can be seen in limited areas in Japan from early summer through the beginning of Oct. An expert, “ sho", trains a specific kind of bird, "U". In a river lit by a torch at night, fish gather near the boat, and the bird catches them. These spectacle performances are seen in places like Ujigawa in Kyoto or Kisogawa in Aichi. Traditionally, only men were allowed to become Usho, but nowadays female Usho are taking the stage.
